BETULA - WIKWASATIKW

2025, 10mn

In the Laurentian forest, the birch tree (
Wikwasatikw – Betula papyrifera) becomes a creative partner.
The dark horizontal marks visible on the bark, the lenticels, become the potential for a musical score.
Using an experimental sonification process, I painstakingly transformed the patterns of the lenticels into music. This process of transformation opens up a new level of relationship with the tree, allowing us to experience what the music of three could sound like
Thanks to a sound spatialisation residency at the GRMS dome, offered by Hexagram (Montréal, Québec), the sonic artwork became three-dimensional and was presented to the public at the Montréal Nouvelles Musiques festival in
March 2025 and at the Labdoc symposium ‘(Re)voir le vivant’ in April 2026.
Betula invites us to be curious, to deepen our capacity for attention and to broaden the range of possible relationships with the trees and the living world.
